Newsboy Cap Crochet Pattern

The Newsboy Cap Crochet Pattern has a cute, slouchy shape with a small brim. This cap uses only basic crochet stitches.

This hat is the 10th pattern in the Crochet Along for a Cause. We are making 1 hat per week to donate to a cancer center, school, or homeless shelter for 12 weeks. There’s always time to join! You can find all the details and hat patterns HERE.

Materials
100g worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn (I used I Love this Yarn in Quarry Days)
I/5.5 mm hook
yarn needle
scissors
stitch marker

Pattern notes & Stitches to Know
magic ring
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
hdc – half double crochet
hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together
sc – single crochet}
dc – double crochet

· written in US terms

· ch 2 does not count as hdc or dc

· ch 1 does not count as sl st or sc

· This beanie is made from the top down in continuous rounds.

· The brim is made with turned rows.

· Approx Finished Size (Teen/Small Adult):
Circumference: 20”
Height: 8”

NEWSBOY CAP CROCHET PATTERN

Round 1: ch 1, hdc 10 in ring, pull ring closed tight

Do not join. Continue the next round working in the first stitch of round 1. Place a stitch marker in the first hdc of the next round

Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (20 hdc)

Continue moving the stitch marker to the first hdc of each round

Round 3: *hdc in 1, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around (30 hdc)

Round 4: *hdc in 2, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around (40 hdc)

Round 5: *hdc in 3, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around (50 hdc)

Round 6: *hdc in 4, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, (60 hdc)

Round 7: *hdc in 5, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around (70 hdc)

Round 8: *hdc in 6, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around (80 hdc)

Round 9: *hdc in 7, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around (90 hdc)

Crown diameter is approx. 9”. To change the size, go up or down a hook size or add or take out increase rounds

Round 10: hdc in each stitch around (90 hdc)

Round 11: *hdc in 7 stitches, hdc2tog* repeat from * to * around (80 hdc)

Round 12: hdc in each stitch around (80 hdc)

Round 13: *hdc in 6 stitches, hdc2tog* repeat from * to * around (70 hdc)

Round 14: hdc in each stitch around (70 hdc)

Round 15: *hdc in 5 stitches, hdc2tog* repeat from * to * around (60 hdc)

Round 16: hdc in each stitch around (60 hdc)

Round 17: hdc in each stitch around (60 hdc)

Round 18: sc in each stitch around (60 hdc)

Round 19: sc in each stitch around (60 hdc)

Round 20: sc in each stitch around (60 hdc)

The brim begins in the next row

Row 1: ch 1, turn, sl st in 5 stitches, sc in 5 stitches, hdc in 20 stitches, sc in 5 stitches, sl st in 5 stitches (40)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, skip first stitch, sl st in next 4, sc in 5 stitches, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 8 stitches, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 9 stitches, 2 hdc in next, sc in next 5, sl st in next 4 (41)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, skip first stitch, sl st in next 3, sc in 5 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 10, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 10, 2 hdc in next, sc in next 5, sl st in next 3 (42)

Row 4: ch 1, turn, skip first stitch, sl st in next 2, sc in 5 stitches, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 5, 2 dc in next, dc in next 12, 2 dc in next, hdc in next 5, 2 hdc in next, sc in next 5, sl st in next 2 (44)

Round 5: do not turn, sc around entire hat (approx. 70 sc)

Fasten off. Weave in the ends,
