Welcome to Part 1 of the Mandala Blanket Crochet Along! We’re just getting started today, so you’ve joined in just in time! Pictured below is what we are going to be working on this week.

Materials
worsted weight yarn in 3 colors (I used I Love this Yarn from Hobby Lobby)
H/5.0 mm hook
yarn needle
scissors

Pattern notes & stitches to know
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
3dcCL – 3 double crochet cluster – *yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops* repeat from * to * 2 more times, yarn over, pull through all 4 loops on hook
ldc – long double crochet – insert hook into row below previous and work a dc
fpdc – front post double crochet
tr – treble crochet
bpsc – back post single crochet
2dcCL – 2 double crochet cluster – *yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops* repeat from * to * 1 more time, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on hook
hdc – half double crochet

· written in US terms

· beginning ch 1 does not count as stitch

· beginning ch 2 does not count as stitch

· This pattern starts in the middle and works outwards in joined rounds.

· Pattern is made with 3 colors. Linen is Color A, Blue is Color B, Pink is Color C.

· It is indicated in the pattern when to change colors.

· Fasten off each color and join new color.

Approx finished size: 9” diameter

MANDALA BLANKET CROCHET PATTERN – PART 1

Part 1 Video Tutorial

Starting with Color A, ch 3, join to first ch to make a circle

Round 1: ch 1, 8 sc in circle, join to first sc with sl st (8 sc)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around, join to first dc with sl st (16 dc)

Change to Color B

Round 3: join to dc, ch 2, *3dcCL, ch 3, skip 1 stitch* repeat from * to * around, join to first CL with sl st (8 CL)

Change to Color A

Round 4: join to skipped dc from round 2; ch 1, *ldc in skipped dc from round 2, ch 3* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (8 dc)

Change to Color C

Round 5: join to ldc, ch 1, *fpdc, 2 sc in ch-3 space, sc in CL from round 3, 2 sc in ch-3* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (48)

Round 6: ch 1, *sc in fpdc, skip 2 stitches, (3dcCL, ch 1, 3dcCL, ch 1, 3dcCL) in next, skip 2 stitches* (24 CL, 8 sc)

Change to Color A

Round 7: join to sc, ch 2, *(tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr) in sc, skip 2 stitches, sc in center CL, skip 2 stitches* repeat from * to * around, join to first tr with sl st (24 tr, 8 sc)

Change to Color B

Round 8: join to sc, *sc in sc, sc in tr, skip ch-1, (3 dc, tr, 3 dc) in next, skip ch-1, sc in tr* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (48 dc, 24 sc, 8 tr)

Change to Color A

Round 9: join to first dc in a shell, *bpsc in 7 stitches, ch 4, skip 3 sc* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (56 sc)

Round 10: ch 2, *(2dcCL, ch 1, skip 1) x 3, CL in next, ch 1, tr3tog in 3 sc from round 8* repeat from * to * around, join to first CL with sl st (24 CL, 8 tr3tog)

Round 11: ch 1, hdc in 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next, *hdc in 4 stitches, 2 hdc in next* repeat from * to * around to last stitch, hdc in last, join  to first hdc with sl st (96 hdc)

Fasten off.

Weave in the ends.

  1. I’ve made many many Afghans but never a Mandala. So excited to get started on this beautiful Mandala.
    I did notice a slight error in your “special stitch” instructions..
    (3dcCL – 2 double crochet cluster – *yarn over, ). I believe this 2 should be a 3?
    Not a big thing but New crocheters may get confused.
