What is a crochet along (CAL)?

A crochet along is when a pattern is broken up into parts and a group works on each section at the same time. It’s fun because you can share your progress with each other and ask questions!

I like to do things pretty casual for a crochet along. There is no “signing up” to join, you simply follow along with the pattern as the different sections get posted! The best way to stay updated on release dates and things is to join my FACEBOOK GROUP and/or SIGN UP FOR MY NEWSLETTER.

Here are the details–

– We will start on Friday, January 14th.

– The CAL will last 10 weeks and will end on Friday, March 18th. Each part will release on Fridays at 6 AM MST

– Each week the next section of the blanket pattern will be released.

– Each week there will be a brand new post on my blog with that weeks’ section of the pattern. There will be a PDF available to download on my blog each week for the duration of the CAL. After it’s over, the free PDF’s will be taken down and moved to my shops. So even if you get behind, make sure to get the printable every week! 🙂

– This blanket is an intermediate level. It uses basic stitches and some special stitches. There will be a full video tutorial for each part.

– Materials: approx 1200g/2298yds (total) worsted weight yarn & H/5.0 mm hook

– Approx finished size (lapghan): 45″ x 45″

– I used 6 Caron Cakes (in Strawberry Trifle) for an easy stripe pattern with less ends to weave in. This project would also be perfect for scrap yarn or your own custom color palette with your favorite yarn!

– There will be a new post for each week, but I will also link each week at the bottom of this post. You can save this post on Pinterest or Ravelry!

    1. Took me awhile to find a #4 worsted weight self- striping yarn I liked. I will get it this week in time for CAL. Ver excited to start this beautiful project.

          1. So I am coming to this a little late, but I love this design. I just ordered my yarn and will work to get caught up when it gets here!

    2. Finally I found this design for my daughter n law and son. She is very picky! I’ll make it with Bumblepurple instead of Strawberry truffle
      Thank you

    3. Hi Breann. Im looking forward to my first CAL with you!
I havent read thru the comments but have you noticed in your top series of what seems front post double crochets .. you may be missing a stripe? All the seties has 4 diagonal stripes but the top left has 3. Do you see what I mean?

    4. Just found this lovely CAL. I have just finished two projects using same Caron Cakes. Will save and print for later. Have 6 wips I’m determined to complete first!

    5. What a gorgeous blanket!! Are the caron cakes you used part of the brightly colored blanket or the more muted colored one? Thanks for giving us the free pdfs too!!

        1. Hi! I’m having a blast making this blanket, and your instructions and video are awesome!! In the picture with the bright pink and gray…is that the strawberry cake? What is the name of the yarn for the more muted blanket with the gray, mauve, etc?

          Thank you!!

          1. Hi! Thank you! The coral and gray is Strawberry and the more neutral one for the video is Buttercream 🙂

        1. Hi Breann, I joined the cal for the blanket, beautiful too, but I haven’t got emails for it. I have subscribed. Thank you

  1. I am so glad you will have a video they are very helpful for me anyway this one is very pretty. Can’t wait to get started. Happy day to you. Oh Yes Happy New Year to you and all the family….

  2. I can’t wait! I am 65 and been crocheting since I was a kid. I have learned so many new stitches doing these CALs! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!😂

  3. Perfect timing! New family baby coming in August. Need new perfect gift. Voila’, here you come with piece of art for me to attempt to copy. Bless you. Happy New Year, EVERONE!

  4. I 💗this mandala blanket & will be joining in…..you state that you used 6 Caron cakes. Did you use them in a continuous fashion or did you cut them up into individual colours for the various sections? Thanks & Happy New Year 2022.

    1. Hi! I mostly let the yarn flow (I did match up colors when joining a new skein). There is one or two sections that I cut specific colors. I’ll let you know in the pattern when I made sure to use a certain color 🙂

  5. I am having trouble finding a stockist for the Caron Cakes I am in Perth Western Australia.
Can you please advise if the Mandala Lion Brand would be a good substitute.
Thank you again and I’m looking forward to the 14th January.

  6. Can I use the Mandala Lion Brand as a substitute and if so what size crochet hook would I use. Thanking you

  7. Hi my daughter wants a light weight blanket so can I use dk light worsted and if so would it be the same yarn quantity of 2298yds
I have the yarn in mind amigo yarn from hobbii

  8. Breann, I am planning to join you on this project. At 78 I like to keep learning new crochet stitches and techniques. I have one quick question however.
Do you have a video or instructions on how to crochet an invisible join for rounds of single and double crochets. Or can you recommend a site for me?
Several years ago I found your caps for cancer project. As a cancer survivor, the project really struck home. Since then I have donated nearly 200 caps to the cancer treatment center where I had treatments using your patterns.
    Thanks for your help

  9. Can you please tell me how many colors you have used. I’m going to use regular yarn, not a ‘cake’.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi! There are 5 colors in the yarn I used. I will not note in the pattern when to change colors as mine happened randomly.

  10. How do the color changes work with the self striping yarn? How do you ensure the yarn color change occurs to make the mandala design. I would think the self striping yarn would just show random color changes throughout the blanket.

  11. I’m new to Following something like this, does each section of pattern come out in the emails I now get ? Or do I need to join the Facebook group ? I’ve just ordered the yarn so really looking forward to a bit of a challenge ! Thank you.

    1. Hi! I’ll post the patterns here on my blog each week and a video on YouTube. I’ll send the link in my email & post in the group 😊

    1. Hi! I wasn’t planning on it, but the last round could easily be repeated until it’s the size you’re looking for 🙂

  12. Lovely blanket and excited to make this! What are the other colors you used besides the strawberry trifle?
I am going to the store to purchase all of the yarn today and I’d like to duplicate these colors as this is absolute perfection.

  13. I hope it is alright to use the yarn I have. My husband is not pleased with the amount of yarn on hand. I don’t dare buy anymore until I use some of this. At almost 86 he doesn’t get the love of yarn.

  14. Can’t wait to get started! hardest part is picking the yarn… I have Caron “Lovely Layers” Cakes… same fiber content, but I guess slightly bigger cakes than the Caron Cakes that are out now.. Didn’t realize they differed in yardage content… now if end of work day came a faster! thank you for the pattern!

    1. Hi! Thank you! You could just repeat the last rounds to make it larger 🙂 I don’t have any modifications to make the other sections larger at this time.

  15. Thanks I will do that
Struggle bus right now with part 4
Counts keep getting off and being left handed dosent like back post dc 😂

  16. Do you know when this cal will be finished? I’m going to make for my daughter’s baby shower at the very beginning of April.

  17. AMAZING . I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THIS AND IT LOOK LIKE YOURS. CAN’T TO START MY PROJECT….INSPIRED BY YOU!!!!
    SINCERELY, IVY

    1. I just discovered this beauty! Can’t wait to begin! I will bed using 4wt yarn in varsity gold and black for my daughter’s Pittsburgh penguin fan boyfriend! Can I make it larger with a row repeat?

      1. Yay! Thank you! Yes, you can. In the final part there are sections you can repeat. It is noted in the pattern/video when you can do this 🙂
