BASIC CROCHET BEANIE FOR BEGINNERS

Make a magic circle

Round 1: ch 2, 12 dc into circle, pull circle closed tight, join to first dc with sl st (12 dc)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around, join to first dc with sl st (24 dc)

Round 3: ch 2, *dc in 1 stitch, 2 dc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (36 dc)

Round 4: ch 2, *dc in 2 stitches, 2 dc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (48 dc)

Round 5: ch 2, *dc in 3 stitches, 2 dc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (60 dc)

Stop here to measure the diameter of your circle. It should be about 6.5 – 7 inches in diameter.

At this point we will stop increasing the circle. There will be just 1 dc in each stitch around for the remaining rounds of the beanie.

Round 6 – 15: ch 2, dc in each stitch around, join to first dc with sl st (60 dc)

Fasten off, weave in your ends.

And you’re done! I hope this tutorial was helpful for you!

  1. Thanks for the size information sheet. That will be great to have for size checking. I’m enjoying this SAL. and Thanks for the patterns. .:)

J’aime bien votre idee du ” crochet along”
Vos explications et tutorels je les apprecie besucoup p. c . que je suis debutante
      Merci de votre implication
      Bonne et belle journee

        1. I really don’t understand. I need to make a newborn size. I love your pattern, but I’m completely having a blonde moment. Can you help me please. This is for my first grandchild. 😁 Thank you so much.

          1. OK 🙂 When you start the beanie, it will begin with a circle. Continue increasing until the circle is about 3.5″-4″ in diameter. Then stop increasing. Work rounds of double crochet (without increasing) until the beanie is about 5″-5.5″ long. Hope that helps!!

      1. Love this super easy pattern. Am puzzled that it won’t be a snug fit. Nothing to hold the beanie in place. Am new to this. Will decreasing stitches give a snug fit? Please do advice. Thanks a million for the tutorials best I’ve come across.

  2. If I want to increase the crown diameter to make a large hat how do I continue to increase ?
Love this pattern so far ❤️

    1. When you make the increasing rounds, stop increasing when the circle is the desired diameter. Then continue crocheting in rounds until it’s the length you want 🙂

  3. I decided I wanted to make a preemie, so with the chart measurements I only increased to 36 sts which measured 3″ and dc enough rows to measure 4″ length. Is that the way to decide the size ?

  4. Hi… good tute!

Can I use the diameter guide to crochet in bulky? For instance, using bulky yarn and bigger hook, and for a child, Would I stop increasing at 6″-6.5″ ? Does that sound right? thanks!

      1. thanks! I depend too much with eyeballing the diameter of the crown, and often end up with a monster hat, or a baby hat!

  5. This is the BEST hat pattern! I crochet all year and donate them to the local homeless shelter or benevolent association in the winter. I have a huge bag full ready to go now, not quite as many as other years. I broke my wrist in June but, when the physical therapist said it would be great therapy to crochet, I did! It was slow at first but a blessing I can still crochet.

I first discovered the pattern with the Crochet Along and have made it so many times since. It works up quickly and works for multiple sizes. I love it!

  6. So I’m new to crocheting by I’m trying new things I did this size but when u stop to measure and what it bigger do you continue with round 5 or what!?

    1. Hi! To make is bigger this is what you do for round 6: ch 2, *dc in 4 stitches, 2 dc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (72 dc)

When working in the round, each time the amount of stitches between the increase (2 stitches in one) goes up by 1. So if you continued you would *dc in 5 stitches, 2 dc in next*

  7. Thank you; this was my first ever project and between the text and video it did not scare me off of trying again. I appreciate the well presented solution.

  8. I love this thank you so much as a beginner this post helped a lot it is now my go pattern for hats. Thanks again for your post
