Hi friends! I’m excited to start this year’s Crochet Along for a Cause! Previous years’ have been such a success and so much fun. Last time we made over 9,000 hats for donation! The Crochet Along for a Cause starts on Friday, August 5, 2022 and will last 12 weeks. Thank you so much for your interest in joining this year, I can’t wait to get started. Make sure to tag #CALforacause on Instagram!
What is a Crochet Along?
A crochet along is when we work on a project all together at the same time. It’s a great way to have fun with fellow crocheters all over the world!
There is no official place to “sign up”. This is a free event. Just simply follow along (I’ll share links to the patterns each week on all social media pages and through email) and post your progress in the Facebook group, Instagram, or here on my blog.
There will be 1 new hat pattern every Friday for 12 weeks until Friday, October 21, 2022. There will be a new pattern posted here, on my blog, each Friday at 6AM MST. Each hat pattern will be intended for donation to your local cancer center/organization, hospital, homeless shelter, or school. (I will not be collecting hats. You can distribute them to a hospital/school/shelter near you.)
You can make as many or as little hats as you’d like. Last year, some made 5 hats and some made 100. It’s all up to you. There are no requirements to take part in this event! And if there’s a pattern you don’t particularly like… skip it! Make a second of one you like better, or a completely different hat!
If you’re a beginner crocheter, or are new to making hats, check out this video tutorial: How to Crochet a Basic Beanie for Beginners (get the written pattern HERE)
Be sure to join my Facebook group HERE for the lastest details, to ask questions, share your work, and talk with fellow crocheters!
Materials
The patterns will use worsted weight yarn with hook sizes 4.5 – 6.0. If you are donating to a hospital, the yarn does need to be a soft cotton or acrylic. Please don’t use wool because it can irritate the scalp. Some good choices are Caron Simply Soft, I Love this Yarn, Red Heart Soft, or Brava Worsted, but any soft acrylic or cotton should work.
Level
The patterns will all be beginner friendly, maybe a couple of easier intermediate. You will need to be familiar with basic crochet stitches and techniques.
Hat Sizes
The hats will range from newborn sizes to adult. There will be patterns geared towards women and some geared towards men. For some of the patterns I will have different sizes available so you can choose what size you want to make.

Thank you Breann. I
Love your CAL’s and your videos are awesome. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I’ll be your forever fan. ❤️🤗👏👍
Aw, thank you so much 🙂
Delighted that you are having beanies for this year’s Crochet Along for the A Cause. I found your website in 2018 and began making beanies for cancer patients. Since then I have donated almost 200 beanies to the Cancer Center. As a cancer survivor, I know how much the little thoughts of kindness mean. Am looking forward to participating with this year’s CAL.
Wow! That’s amazing!
Looking forward to this again. I gave away 40 hats last year
Yay, this is exciting. I will forward to my Cap Crusaders group. We crochet caps to oncology wards/clinics/anyone who needs. If we donations of wool etc, we still crochet them but they get delivered to a homeless shelter.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful patterns – so very generous of you.
That’s awesome!
This year I will be donating my hats to my local jr high. They are always in need of hats. Most of my hats will be in blue color to go along with the anti bullying campaign too. 💙 so I have a double cause on my hats.
Awesome!!
That’s awesome!
Thank you sooo much for doing these patterns again. I have joined it the past and look forward to doing it again. ❤️
Yay! Thank you!!
Thank you looking forward to this
What yarn should be used cotton and acrylic and soft yarn like for chemo
We make acrylic only – soft yarns. Not cotton and definitely not wool. We make crocheted caps for hospitals. Just FYI… in each pattern she reiterates what to use. Just some really awesome patterns.
Looking forward to this CAL…several crocheters from Connect-the -Dots will be joining in. Our efforts will go to local hospitals and charities, and Americans for Native Americans (ANA).
I started making caps from Breann’s patterns back in 2019. I’ve made nearly 400 in three years and have my favorites that I’ve repeated over and over. I write notes on the pattern sheet each time. It’s fun to see the dates and my comments about what colors I used and any variations I made. Looking forward to this years’ new patterns.
Thank you so much!!
looking forward to the patterns, our group makes chemo caps in Feb and Oct for cancer patients in a few hospitals near us in CT.. this will be our 20th year doing this, we have cancer survivors also as members… we crochet hats and scarves to match for children at Christmas time.. God bless….
Yay! Thank you so much!!
Dearest Breann such a huge privilege to do this CAL beanies…. I made various donations from my last CAL beanies. I could bless some of my friend’s moms with beanies as well as some to a homeless project as well as some to our local public hospital cancer unit. It is such a blessing to be able to bless others. Thank you for your generosity and commitment to this CAL. God bless you & and family❤️
Thank you so much!
My first time participating and I’m enjoying every one I’ve made. The patterns are beautiful. One was a challenge, I frogged it about 7 times and was determined to get it made and I succeeded. I give to a place called the garage of blessings. This place helps the community free of charge from clothing to food. People come by and donate all the time. Volunteers are always there to help. This is my giving place. I would like to eventually tackle the previous years patterns soon. Keep the patterns coming, thank you and God bless you.
