The Braided Cable Pocket Shawl Crochet Pattern uses the Braided Cable stitch for a pretty and textured border throughout. This cable stitch is on the easier side (for a cable stitch) and is great for the beginner cable maker! Plus, I have a video tutorial for the Braided Cable Stitch.

Choosing the Right Yarn and Hook Size

Before diving into mastering the cable stitch, it’s important to first consider the type of yarn and hook size you’ll be using for this project. The yarn choice can greatly impact the look and feel of your shawl, so be sure to select a yarn that is soft, warm, and easy to work with. For this particular pattern, a medium-weight yarn in a cozy blend of acrylic would be ideal. As for the hook size, we recommend a J/6.0 mm hook for a loose, flowy shawl. For this pattern I used WeCrochet Shine Worsted in Currant. This is a pima cotton blend, but any worsted weight yarn would work great – cotton, acrylic or wool!

Mastering the Cable Stitch

To master the cable stitch, start by understanding the basics of creating twists and turns in your crochet work. This technique involves crossing stitches over each other to create the intricate cable effect. I have a full video tutorial for this stitch included in the pattern. The braided cable stitch is a great beginner cable crochet stitch. By mastering this stitch, you’ll be able to add depth and texture to your project, setting the stage for seamlessly integrating functional pockets later on.

          1. You sound like me!! I think it is funny! Thanks for taking the time for answering again! Have a fun Thanksgiving!

  1. Hi
Your braided cable shawl pattern row 8-147 says to repeat row six and seven which is the braid and Single crochet. According to the picture, The entire Shawl does not look like it’s a braid just on the two long edges of the shawl. What am I missing? Thanks for responding!

    1. Hi! Yes, the two braids are on each side of the shawl. The cables run vertically. When repeating rows 6 & 7, the cable row will begin and end with the cable with dc stitches in between. Hope that helps!

      1. Thanks so much but I guess I’m confused. The beginning of the pattern I ch 57 and begin the cable at row 4but I don’t see where it says to dc rows. I love this shawl and would like to get it right. Thanks!

        1. The cables begin on row 4. You will make the first cable one time. Then it says to dc in each stitch across to the last 8 stitches. Then repeat the cable pattern once more.
