BEACH DAY BUCKET HAT CROCHET PATTERN
Starting with 4.5 mm hook and Color A, make a magic loop (or ch 4, sl st to the first ch to make a loop)
Round 1: ch 1, 8 sc in loop, pull loop closed tight, join to first sc with sl st (8 sc)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch around, join to first sc with sl st (16 sc)
Round 3: ch 1, *sc in 1 stitch, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (24 sc)
Round 4: ch 1, *sc in 2 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (32 sc)
Round 5: ch 1, *sc in 3 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (40 sc)
Round 6: ch 1, *sc in 4 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (48 sc)
Round 7: ch 1, *sc in 5 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (56 sc)
Round 8: ch 1, *sc in 6 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (64 sc)
Round 9: ch 1, *sc in 7 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (72 sc)
Round 10: ch 1, *sc in 8 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (80 sc)
The diameter should be approx. 5.25”. To make it larger add an additional increase round. Note that the desired diameter of the crown should be smaller when using sc rather than with dc or hdc.
Round 11 – 23: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join to first sc with sl st (80 sc)
Change to Color B
Round 24 – 30: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join to first sc with sl st (80 sc)
To add more length before starting the brim, continue with Color B until it’s the desired length
Change to Color A and 3.5 mm hook
Note: if you added an additional increase round, the end counts will not be the same
Round 31: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join to first sc with sl st (80 sc)
Round 32: ch 1, *sc in 3 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (100 sc)
Round 33: ch 1, *sc in 4 stitches, 2 sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (120 sc)
Round 34 – 39: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join to first sc with sl st (120 sc)
Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Yeah! Found last years patterns so have already made 4 hats and almost finished with the 5th hat. What fun! A challenge since I also crochet for Octos for a Preemie US and have to use a 2.25 hook and make the stitches super tight. Having gone through chemo this project has a special place in my heart so was excited when I found your site/project. – judy
Where. Do you find last year hat patterns?
At the bottom of this page 🙂 https://www.hookedonhomemadehappiness.com/crochet-along-for-a-cause/
How large should the crown be if making for an adult woman? I am working with two strands of 4 wgt yarn and an I hook. Right now I have about 7.25″ crown?
The crown should be approx 5.25″
I love this hat and am currently trying to make one. Where the end of each round meets has formed a diagonal line. Is this normal? Most likely I’m not doing something correct. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Hi! The seam will be a little bit diagonal
I made this hat a few times. I have just finished making a baby version and it came out so cute.l made a couple of educated guesses and eye balling. LOL
Yay! That’s ok! That’s how to perfect your craft 🙂
Hi, can you tell me if the yarn used in this pattern is the same weight as Holly Lobby I Love This Cotton. I am not good at knowing which yarn is interchangeable. Thank you.
I am so happy to start making these hats. I also participated in last year CAL. It was so nice making those beautiful hats. Thank you for teaching us to crochet something beautiful to donate.
Yes it is 🙂
Thank you for doing the CAL again this year! Hats are a great summer project since they are small and I can take my WIPs with me! I was wondering, if I were to make a child sized version, what diameter would you suggest for the crown?
thank you for the info. now i can start making hats.
Hi, my daughter finished her hat, she was wondering how she acquired a prominent diagonal line on her hat and how to avoid it, or if its normal? although not too bad for her first crochet hat. Where can I send photos of her finished product. She is still donating the hat as is to our local oncology military hospital. Many thanks…
I am happy to join this cal. I make hats for the homeless, this is a different area to share with.
I can barely wait to get started!
Can this hat be a unisex hat? My nephew really likes bucket hats and I was wondering if I could make this one for him.
Totally! 🙂
do i have to block this after? I used cotton yarn
Hi! You can! I did not block mine 🙂
Terrific pattern! I started the first one and found it to be so easy and really a great hat, I just went crazy and made like 5 already in the last couple days, changing colors! Great pattern and written in a very easy to follow manner.
Since you are so good at writing this and others I have tried, I was wondering if you ever had any ideas or plans to do a Fedora style? If not, I think you should, your patterns are wonderful.
Thanks so much, really enjoyed this!
Enjoyed this pattern fun and easy!
Thank you so much!
