I’ve used this granny square in a few designs. I have the Girl’s Boho Vest, Granny Square Baby Blanket, and a Hippie Sling Bag!

 

Basic Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Materials
Your favorite yarn with correct hook
yarn needle
scissors

Level
easy

Pattern Notes & Stitches to Know
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
dc – double crochet

NOTE: There are many different ways of doing the basic granny square. I like this method because I think it hides the join and ch 3 the best

ch 3 at beginning of each round counts as dc

BASIC GRANNY SQUARE

ch 4, join to first ch with sl st to make a loop

Round 1: ch 3 (counts as dc), working in the ring, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, join to first ch 3 with sl st (12 dc)

Round 2: sl st in next 2 stitches so you’re working in the ch 3 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in ch 3 space,

*(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch 3 space*, repeat from * to * around, join to first ch 3 with sl st (24 dc)

Round 3: sl st in next 2 stitches so you’re working in the first ch 3 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in ch 3 space, 3 dc in the space between the 3 dc groups from previous row (see picture below)

NOTE: In the next round I will be joining a new color (optional)

Round 4: sl st over the next 2 stitches, insert hook in ch 3 space, pull up new color,

3 dc in each space between the 3 dc groups from the previous row across to the next ch 3 space, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 3 space,  3 dc in each space between the 3 dc groups from the previous row across to the next ch 3 space* repeat from * to * around, join to first ch 3 with sl st (48 dc)

And there you have it! Simply repeat round 4 until it’s the desired size, like a blanket or a sweater!

  1. I love your granny square pattern. A friend taught me the method when i was 19 about after joining to slip stitch over to the next space. All the other granny square pattetns i looked up doesn’t show it. Only yours shows it. Thank you for the good granny square pattern. I will send you a link to my afghan after i make it. How can i share a picture once it’s finished?

  2. This is the easiest and simple granny stich. I am teaching my granddaughter to crochet and this one is so simple nd you can “hide” the chain stich! Love it. Thank you!

  3. Round 4 typo.
    Is it supposed to be 3 dc in each space created from the row under it? Or just 1 dc on one row? I don’t see a 3 dc repeat on all sides.
